Following overwhelming demand from fans to see the gifted singer-songwriter Kina Grannis on her first Australian tour, the Frontier Touring Company is delighted to announce two final dates for fans who missed out on tickets to the sold out Sydney and Melbourne shows.

A 3rd and final Sydney show has been added at the Sydney Opera House – Studio on Friday 23 March and a 2nd and final Melbourne show at Ormond Hall on Thursday 29 March.

Since Grannis began performing via her YouTube channel in 2007, she has captured the attention and love of a worldwide audience. Subscriptions to her channel have steadily grown over the past few years to reach over half a million this year and her videos have accumulated more than 90 million views.

In between writing songs, singing and starring in her own video clips, including In Your Arms which features 288,000 Jelly Belly jelly beans in a stop motion spectacular, Grannis self-released her debut album Stairwells (out in Australia on 16 March through Liberator).

Stairwells has received much acclaim and recognition internationally, debuting in the Billboard Top 200 and peaking at #2 on Billboard’s New Artist/Heatseekers chart.

Joining Kina on all shows will be local artist Ollie Brown. Since swapping a uni degree for a six string guitar, Brown has travelled Australia and throughout the world recording and performing the stories of love and travel that he experienced along the way.

With three of the shows on the tour already sold out, tickets for these final shows will surely be in high demand. Don’t miss your chance to see Kina Grannis on her debut Australian tour.

Following his acclaimed ‘Only Sparrows’ album tour last year, Josh Pyke and band will play four special theatre shows in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney on the ‘Love Lies’ tour.

Debuting at #4 on the ARIA Album chart, Only Sparrows was Josh’s third album to debut top five in the ARIA charts. It was named the Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Pop Album of The Year’ ahead of Jay-Z and Kanye West and Kate Bush and saw its lead single ‘No One Wants A Lover’ score three ARIA Award nominations in 2011.

Earlier this year, Melbourne five-piece Snakadaktal announced that they would be embarking on their first ever national headline tour, accompanied by Sydney’s sweetheart, Elizabeth Rose.

The friends have experienced a truly overwhelming response to the tour. Tickets began to quickly fly out the door after the first announcement and continued at an even rapider pace after the band snatched up the 22nd spot in the Hottest 100 with their radio-favourite single ‘Air’.

Over the weekend Snakadaktal were thrilled to let fans know that they have announced additional shows at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne and Ed Castle in Adelaide to meet demand from fans that missed out on tickets to the already sold out shows in these cities.

The five friends who make up Snakadaktal are now set to release a new single from their stellar and critically acclaimed EP in the form of a stunning track, playfully titled “Carnival (Lobster Monster)”. The track features Sean Heathcliff’s echoing voice jumping and skipping amongst the somewhat delicate musical notes which were self-produced by the band in guitarist Joseph Clough parent’s house.

Not being one’s to sit around and twiddle their thumbs, Snakadaktal have also just released a film clip for the track (directed and produced by Pharm Productions) that premiered on Pedestrian.TV earlier today! Watch the Carnival (Lobster Monster) clip now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ert6C8PJYN0

As a thank you to their fans, Snakadaktal also are releasing a 6 track “Swim School” Remix Tour EP that will be available by download to every punter who purchases a pre-sold concert ticket from online ticketing companies for the tour.

CATCALL will hit the road this May in support of her current single SATELLITES and to preview songs from her forthcoming debut album THE WARMEST PLACE (out 4 May through Ivy League). The national tour will see CATCALL and her stellar new band hit Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne.

Having kicked off 2012 by supporting Brazilian babes CSS in Sydney and Melbourne with Satellites praised by blogs the world over and added to rotation on triple j – the national tour is yet another milestone in what has been a tremendous year so far for Catcall.

Fans can expect to hear current single SATELLITES and other album tracks played by the all-star line-up, which includes Al Grigg (Red Riders / Palms), Andrew Elston (aka Toni Toni Lee), Bec Allen (The Fabergettes) and Simon Parker (Lost Valentinos).

Main support for the tour will be Sydney-siders Palms, featuring Al Grigg (singer, guitarist) and Tom Wallace (drums, girlish backing vocals), who were previously in Red Riders. Their first single “The Summer Is Done With Us” is melodic, a bit scuzzy, and has been an omnipresent feel-good soundtrack on discerning radio stations across the recent summer months.

The Gorilla Vs Bear tipped summer jam SATELLITES has now been released as a digital bundle featuring remixes by BENI, MAGIC SILVER WHITE, FORCES and more, and is available now from iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/au/album/satellites-mixes-ep/id502710763

“a big, dramatic/wistful dance-pop anthem” – Gorilla Vs Bear

“a dramatic pop banger” – Rose Quartz

“What a summer anthem from Sydney’s Catcall with “Satellites”! Once your done listening its beyond easy to keep hitting play again, and again and again” – Stoney Roads

“Loving this retro 80′s radio vibe on this track from Catcall. Smooth and soothing are the best descriptors I can think.” – Audio Drums

“With the first two singles converting many an indie kid to the world of pop this release is much anticipated. Even my father a devout Belinda Carlisle fan, promptly got out the pen & paper when ‘Satellites’ was played on ABC local the other week.” – Auditor

“I first heard a clip of “Satellites” during an episode of 90210 way back in May (yes, I watch 90210; yes, I know it’s an execrable show; no, I don’t care), but it’s only just being released now — and it was well worth the wait. “Satellites” has the same kind of reflective, downbeat energy as a Xenomania ballad, with a luminous spaced-out quality that’s both referential and futuristic. Basically, it’s synth-spangled gorgeousness that’s already one of my favorite tracks this year — and it bodes extraordinarily well for her debut album, The Warmest Place, due out at the top of 2012 via Ivy League.” – Muu Muse

“Some funky, feel good 80′s inspired electro-pop to ease away Wednesday blues. Satellites is the first single off Australian artist Catcall’s upcoming LP debut, Warmest Place, due early 2012. I have had the track on steady repeat since initial discovery. The catchiest of choruses lead to the happiest of cats.” – The Untz and The Indie

“You’ve most likely heard Catcall’s euphoric single “Satellites” by now. Since it’s debut as the opening track on (to the best of my knowledge) Fear of Tiger’s magical The Guestlist #26, Catcall has taken the blogosphere by storm. Upon first listen to this track, I was immediately struck by emotions.” – Binary

Clubfeet present the final offering from Gold on Gold, a project which started in 2010 from a then-unknown Melbourne (via Cape Town) five-piece and received a huge second wind in the second half of 2011 through a collaborative video project with Sydney videographer Alex Goddard – hosted at www.goldongold.tv.

The past six months have seen the band receive huge international acclaim, regularly chart on Hype Machine / We Are Hunted / Elbows, debut their live show at CMJ (where they landed in Paste’s ‘10 Great Bands from CMJ’ list) and have two singles on high rotation in their quasi-homeland of Australia.

BrightLightsBigCity concludes the six-chapter video project on its most vibrant, celebratory note yet. Director Alex Goddard hand-painted the processed 8mm frame by frame in an extremely exhausting process that has definitely paid in spades. It features subtle nods to each of the previous clips, including a welcome return from superbabe Tiah Eckhardt (Count Your Lovers). There are accompanying remixes by The Whip, Jetlag (feat. Andy Rourke of The Smiths), Mercury and All Dom Wrong.

Clubfeet now disappear for a few months, before returning with their first original material in close to two years in mid-2012. Watch this space.

What critics have been saying:

“…instantly charming, and at a time when so much idling synth-pop is floating around, that’s worth a lot.” – Pitchfork

“One of the Southern Hemisphere’s hottest new acts, Clubfeet have been making quite a name for themselves over the past year with a series of EPs and videos that combine taut disco rhythms with dreamy pop to maximum effect.” – Mixmag

“Clubfeet excel at soft rock re-imagined as synth-pop comfort food.” – Spin

“Clubfeet have a salient ability to knock a pop song out flat. And it’s all done in some of the most beautiful, rhythmic and tasteful ways imaginable.” – Filter Magazine

“Which is to say, it’s super-catchy and accessible and fun and you should enjoy it here before some conglomerate catches wind and ruins it forever.” – RCRD LBL

“Think Euro band The Teenagers, but on ecstasy …the makings of the next IT band.” – URB

Frontier Touring has the honour of presenting Belgium’s biggest artist – dEUS – for their very first Australian headline shows!

Hailing from Antwerp, Belgium, dEUS is spearheaded by original members Tom Barman on vocals and guitars and Klaas Janzoons on keyboards and violin, who are joined by drummer Stéphane Misseghers, bassist Alan Gevaert and guitarist/backing vocalist Mauro Pawlowski.

“A band that some might say are Europe’s answer to Sonic Youth. At times, it sounds like Queens of the Stone Age chilling with a string section beside a tar pool, whilst at other points it goes full-on purple-rock raining down from on Beck’s mansion, before croaking and creaking to a stop.” – Drowned In Sound

dEUS have enjoyed a remarkable 20 year career thus far, with their star growing bigger by the day. Their previous five albums have earned them a place on the hit-lists of numerous tastemakers including Drowned In Sound and Pitchfork whilst their latest offering Keep You Close (out in Australia on 30 March, through Liberator) has been described as a glorious climax of their musical talents:

“One of the finest albums to have come out this year and one of the finest albums in the band’s entire career. 5 Stars.” – Sputnik Music

“It’s the world-class album that the band has had in them for a long time.” – Goddeau

“A brooding and atmospheric mini-masterpiece of an album on which love is never more than a kiss or a stolen glance away, and heartbreak lurks around every hidden corner. 4/5 Stars.” – Virgin Media

Keep You Close has been awarded ‘Rock Album Of The Year’ from iTunes in France, Holland and Belgium and their European album sales exceed a total of 60,000 copies following a hugely successful tour of the continent, which included numerous sold out dates.

The seasoned performers played an astonishing 20 festivals in the summer of 2011, yet have never before graced Australian fans with tour dates – until now. Their Melbourne and Sydney shows are sure to impress, catch dEUS at their premiere headline shows down under before it’s too late!

Dusty, Adam, Aiden and Dave aka Woe & Flutter are back to blow your mind with their latest dreamy, garage-pop nugget I Think I’m Fine.

Laden with jangly guitars, rich harmonies and enough summer sun to transport you to your favourite coastline no matter where you may be, I Think I’m Fine is the second single taken from the band’s debut, self-titled EP that also spawned the brutal yet infectious triple j fave Cities Of The Red Night.

Having had a dream run in 2011 which included being unearthed by triple j and inking a deal with Ivy League Records, Woe & Flutter spent most of last year on the road, playing shows around the country with the likes of Bleeding Knees Club, Papa Vs Pretty, Deep Sea Arcade and Alpine to name a few.

With a national tour on the horizon, no doubt 2012 will prove to be a rather tremendous year for the four boys from the Gold Coast.

“Teeming with an intense energy, this Gold Coast band is a nice reprieve from the sea of tired pop-rock bands out there”- The West Australian

“The simple versatility that these guys seem to have in the way of both songwriting and performing seems to reach well beyond their years… I haven’t watched a band I thought had so much potential…” Faster Louder

‘I Think I’m Fine’ is taken from the debut self titled EP Out Now

dEUS return with a new album on March 30. Keep You Close is the follow up to 2008’s Vantage Point and was recorded at the band’s own studio in their home city of Antwerp over a six month period with producers David Botrill (Muse, Placebo, Tool) and Adam Noble. Keep You Close is, according to frontman, Tom Barman, “very passionate, but danceable. If Vantage Point was a vodka redbull, Keep You Close is a mojito.”

As the title suggests, Keep You Close sees lead singer and lyricist Tom Barman react to Vantage Point with a determination to return the band to a more personal lyrical style and a warmer musical approach. Whilst still immensely proud of Vantage Point, Tom felt that its follow up should move away from that album’s “very loud, in your face” sound. Consequently, much of the focus of Keep You Close has been to develop a sound that embraces a more organic and spacious dynamic. To aid this process, and in stark contrast to the studio bound writing approach of Vantage Point, the songs that make up Keep You Close were road tested live at festivals throughout the writing and recording period and developed through live rehearsals within the studio to, in Tom’s words, ensure that they were “more mature when it came to recording them”.

Fans of dEUS will recognise the continuance of the band’s diverse musical template throughout the album, embracing rhythms that “go to your legs and your heart” as Tom puts it alongside their much vaunted mixing of diverse musical styles to create an album of multiple shades which remains a complete body of work. A chance visit to Antwerp by Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers’ Greg Dulli saw him visit the studio and lay down vocals for “The Dark Sets In”, a coincidence made all the stranger by a conversation the previous day in which the band remarked that it would be perfect for his voice.

The band’s story began in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1992, in a small but vibrant and incestuous alternative music scene, where each musician was as likely to be in five bands as one. A mutual love of all things alternative and underground melded five talented musicians and performers into dEUS. A band that spent the next twenty years producing a body of work that, chameleon-like, shifted through an array of musical styles and tones, a dazzling kaleidoscope that was eternally, indisputably and umistakably dEUS’s own. dEUS went on to record 5 albums between 1994 and 2008.

The album is released by Liberator Music on March 30th 2012.

After a four-year absence, Belgian band, dEUS return with the brand new single, “Ghost”, from the album Keep You Close. The song is accompanied by the controversial video clip directed by Saman Keshavarz. Says Keshavarz of the clip, “I had the idea from a Facebook post about Jesus riding a skateboard. Somebody posed a thought: ‘What if Jesus skated?’”

The resulting clip is a culmination of ideas suggested to Keshavarz via the social network with images complementing the duality of the music. “I wanted to do a complete tonal shift, just like the song. The idea that things start fun & simple and then become more elaborate and hurtful struck me as interesting,” says the director.

The album is released by Liberator Music on March 30th 2012. dEUS will be performing in Sydney and Melbourne on the following dates:

Thu 10 May Sydney Manning Bar

Sat 12 May Melbourne Corner Hotel

Knock on the door and let DEEP SEA ARCADE take you to the OUTLANDS, a dark, cinematic world where kaleidoscopic pop songs illuminate the landscape. Paying homage to experimental cinema and the dystopian sci-fi films of the 60s, the Sydney five-piece will take you on a journey through some bold terrain with their debut album OUTLANDS.

Some years in the making, OUTLANDS is the culmination of a long friendship between songwriters Nic Mckenzie and Nick Weaver. Frontman Mckenzie and bassist Weaver have been playing music together since their mid-teens, and the pair recruited drummer Carlos Adura and guitarists Simon Relf and Tim Chamberlain to round out the band a few years back.

“Carlos is a long-time friend and was an obvious choice of drummer and mascot,” explains Mckenzie. “If we were the Ninja Turtles he would be Splinter. Simon Relf and Nick Weaver met when they were hired as members of a one-time house band for a party in a Country Women’s Association Hall on the New South Wales south coast. Tim was spotted playing creepy reverb guitars in another band and was promptly stolen.”

Initially using four-track tape recorders, broadcast microphones and unconventional computer programs to create songs in their bedrooms, Mckenzie and Weaver were able to see their music fully realised with the additional band members giving the songs the depth and energy they deserved. Since then, DEEP SEA ARCADE have toured with the likes of Noel Gallagher, Modest Mouse and Washington, played the Primavera Festival in Spain, The Great Escape in Brighton UK and had tracks receive high rotation airplay both in Australia and abroad by stations including BBC Radio 1 and triple j. The first single from OUTLANDS, the deliciously upbeat GIRLS has already proved a firm favourite on-air and live.

“This is SICK!” – Zane Lowe, BBC Radio 1

“GIRLS started out by jamming on a guitar riff that was essentially ‘Wild Thing’ backwards and a little bit inside out,” explains Mckenzie. “Lyrically it started as a parody of male camaraderie and then turned into a confession of our love of ladies.”

Album opener and title track OUTLANDS is one of the darker songs on the record. “It was originally demoed as a 90s beat, Portishead / DJ Shadow inspired track,” says Mckenzie. “When we took it to the rest of the guys it went in more of a rock’n’roll direction that seemed to work really well – especially with Tim and Carlos’ epic Zeppelinesque outro.”

Directly referencing ‘The Outlands’ that appear in Jean-Luc Godard’s film ‘Alphaville’, the track’s lyrics are inspired by the imagery of that film and Francois Truffaut’s ‘Farenheit 451’. Such references are scattered throughout the album, but the cinematic feel and lyrical leanings of OUTLANDS are no surprise – Mckenzie studied film at art school and has been responsible for directing all of DEEP SEA ARCADE’s beautifully stylised videos to date.

“As a band, we hope to one day make a video clip that references both ‘Alphaville’ and ‘Farenheit 451,” he says.

Instrumentally and melodically, the track SEEN NO RIGHT pays homage to the 90s beat and Madchester scene. “Nic got kicked out of his share house and moved in with his mum for three months,” says Weaver. “That’s actually where the entire song was written and recorded. We bought a Casiotone CT6500 from the local charity shop, and that keyboard plays a huge part in the sound of the song. The drums are actually the drums to GRANITE CITY cut up and edited to fit a new arrangement. Apart from a couple of studio overdubs, the demo had some sort of makeshift charm, and (mixer) Dan Grech-Marguerat insisted that we mix it as it was.”

Dan Grech-Marguerat (The Vaccines, The Kooks) was one of a number of people who worked on the album. The songs were tracked by Simon Berkfinger and Tim Whitten in Sydney with additional recording done at Mckenzie’s house before being mixed by Grech-Marguerat in the UK and Doug Boehm (Girls, The Vines) in the USA.

GRANITE CITY was written about a girl from Aberdeen, Scotland also known as ‘The Granite City’. “It’s about loving someone and not being sure if they love you back,” says Mckenzie. “The whole song was written on a Juno 60 with an arpeggiated keyboard part that was mostly removed in mixing. The band had a lot of trouble interpreting the song and never felt that it was right – it was almost dropped from the album. Surprisingly, on the day of recording, it suddenly came to life. A lot of the keyboard parts in the song were tracked in a drunken flurry at 4am, hours before it was mixed.”

Second single STEAM also proved to be a little tricky. “This song was inspired by being cranky!” says Weaver. “Whenever Nic is cranky this is how he feels. The whole song except for the middle eight revolves around one riff. We tracked a million different versions of it at lots of different tempos and it pretty much sent the band, engineers, mixers, our girlfriends, our label and our management insane. In effect it made everyone cranky, just the way Nic felt when he wrote it.” Luckily, it was worth all the effort, as the resulting track is one of the album’s highlights.

The song TOGETHER was one of Weaver’s old instrumental demos that had new life breathed into it when Mckenzie had the idea to give it a spooky half time Phil Spector feel. The Mellotron string parts that feature quite heavily were a very late addition, recorded the night the band was due to send the song to mixer Doug Boehm.

A track already familiar to Deep Sea Arcade fans, LONELY IN YOUR ARMS came to life in a rare one-take studio recording. “This was one of Nic’s songs that had only been very loosely demoed,” says Weaver. “We were recording some other songs with (Simon) Berkfinger and he revved us up to have a go at Lonely even though we’d never really played it as a band. The version we ended up with was a first take and we like to think it has an energy and spontaneity that we couldn’t have gotten otherwise.”

“ALL THE KIDS is a song inspired by a friend’s childhood tale of waiting in her dad’s car until the school bell rang because she was too shy to hang out with other kids in the playground,” says Mckenzie. “The guitar solo is very much inspired by Johnny Marr from The Smiths.”

Again taking cues from art school, the track RIDE actually began as sound design project. “My tutor asked me to make a piece with found sounds recorded with a crappy handy cam,” says Mckenzie. “The rhythm bed of the song is made up from sounds of bicycle wheels, leaves, metal poles, lunch boxes and table tops being hit. This song is also very much inspired by The Smiths, and should be listened to while driving in the rain.”

IF THE DEVIL WON’T TAKE YOU first came about from a Tim Chamberlain guitar riff and was followed through as a very Ray Manzarek inspired jam. Mckenzie took the riff and wrote the rest of the song on bass guitar while Weaver filled out the chords on guitar. “The song is inspired by The Doors and The Zombies,” says Mckenzie. “Its arrangement pays homage to The Monkees’ ‘Steppin Stone’ and lyrically it’s inspired by the title song to the Peter Sellers film ‘After The Fox’.

Another track familiar to fans of the band is DON’T BE SORRY. “This was an attempt to write a song from a woman’s perspective, in the same way that Lee Hazlewood wrote Nancy Sinatra’s ‘These Boots Are Made For Walkin’,” says Mckenzie. Of the track, triple j said “Don’t Be Sorry is the kind of reverberated pop that recalls The Beatles and The Kinks; waves of psychedelia and watery guitars that will hook you in and pull you under.”

The final track on the album is the slinky AIRBULANCE. “This is probably the oldest song on the album,” says Mckenzie. “Nick and I wrote it when we were in high school and it hasn’t changed too drastically since. Carlos recorded new drums over the original demo and we did some new guitar overdubs and vocals but otherwise it’s similar to how it was when it was conceived.” Testament to the fact that great songs, no matter when they were written, will always remain great songs.

“Strumming a sound steeped in 60s beat, surf and psychedelic pop, the band’s strength lies in the songwriting partnership of Nic Mckenzie and Nick Weaver. After spending their teenage years beavering away over countless bedroom demos, a far bigger stage awaits.”

WITH THE CURRENT SINGLE KEEP YOUR HEAD UP ADDED ACROSS THE BOARD TO THE AUSTEREO NETWORK AND ALL THE NOVA RADIO NETWORKS ANDY GRAMMER IS CERTAINLY PROVING THAT HE IS A FORCE TO RECKONED WITH.

It’s widely known that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert at anything. Andy Grammer logged his 10,000 hours of practice on the streets of Los Angeles. With his car battery powered amplifier and acoustic guitar in tow, Grammer managed to sing his way from the streets to the center of the music industry.

One listen to Grammer’s self-titled S-Curve Records debut and it is clear that this young man became an expert. From the buoyant “Keep Your Head Up” to the breezy “Fine By Me,” jubilant, horn-laced “The Pocket,” and emotionally-charged “You Should Know Better,” his irresistible pop songs blend heartfelt, compelling lyrics with instantly unforgettable melodies. Think the relaxed vibe of Jason Mraz crossed with the rock soul of Maroon 5.

Even though he knew music would be his path, Grammer never assumed it would be an easy road or that he could take any success for granted. He played any corner that would have him—using every experience to hone not only his songwriting craft but to learn how to understand his audience. His desire to be heard led him to the streets, “I didn’t know what else to do. So I just went out there and started playing.”

Named one of Billboard’s 2011 Artists to Watch, the singer recorded the album in New York and Los Angeles with a collection of top producers, including Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Maroon 5), S*A*M & Sluggo (Train, Neon Trees) and Barrett Yeretsian (Christina Perri). “Basically, it was show up somewhere, really dig in with someone who’s going to help you get your creative vision across and then go somewhere else and do it again,” he says. “We got some really great stuff that I wouldn’t have gotten if I just worked with one producer.”

Every song that Grammer wrote on the album had one goal in mind: “I’m just trying to track down the truth,” says Grammer, who was born in Los Angeles and grew up in New York. “My favorite thing is to pop up above everybody and write from a bird’s eye view. It may be about a break-up, it may be about a good relationship, it may be what we’re doing on this planet here. I like to be far enough away to see the whole scope of what’s occurring.”

While much of his music is upbeat, Grammer is quick to add he’s hardly “pink and fluffy. I’m not intentionally trying to be positive, I’m just trying to be real.”

In fact, Grammer wrote “Keep Your Head Up” as a letter of encouragement to himself after he’d spent an exhausting day street performing and had little to money to show for it. The video, which features groundbreaking interactive technology in a partnership between VEVO, Interlude and S-Curve, won an MTV O Award for Most Innovative Video, topping entries from Arcade Fire, Robyn and OK Go! “The most challenging part about the video was the sheer amount of times we’d have to tape each cut so people can go through the video thousands of different ways,” Grammer says. “It was crazy.” The clip stars “The Office’s” Rainn Wilson. “He’s such a gracious, amazing guy,” says Grammer, who met Wilson through a former roommate. “He gave me tips on how to look in the camera. The video has gotten so much more exposure because of him coming and hanging out.”

Grammer grew up in a musical household. His father, Red Grammer, is a Grammy-nominated children’s performer who gladly indulged his son’s desire to get on stage…to a point. “My dad would bring me up to sing with him. I’d just have a couple of lines,” Grammer remembers. “Afterwards, I’d say, ‘Dad, I think I’m going to need a bigger part in your show because I nailed that. Seriously, it was intense. I can see it in their eyes, they want more of me.’ I was six or seven and he just laughed and laughed.”

His dad gave Grammer an insider’s insight into what happens off stage as well. “The most important thing I learned from my father about being a musician was the work ethic,” Grammer says. “He worked really hard, he traveled all across the country. I saw his respect for his audience, respect for himself. I saw him take days off where he wouldn’t talk to rest his voice. I saw the work it takes to cultivate an artist’s career.”

In 9th grade, Grammer picked up his dad’s guitar and taught himself to write songs. “I knew one chord, so I was like, ‘I’m going to write the coolest song with one chord ever’,” Grammer laughs. His first band, Out of the Blue, got off to an auspicious start after playing some covers and Grammer’s first original song, “Doorstep,” at a battle of bands contest. “We did not win…at all,” Grammer says. “I thought it was going to be a big concert moment. It was fun, but it was like, ‘This is really hard and we suck’.”

Around the same time, Grammer had a musical epiphany when he heard Lauryn Hill’s seminal solo album, 1998’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” “It felt like it was shifting things inside of me and I loved it,” he says. Other artists who helped him influence his sound include Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Coldplay and Common. “For me, it’s always been about about a mix of hip-hop, acoustic singer/songwriters and piano rock,” he says. “I pull all those together. Each song may lean more heavily on one than the other, but they all have all three pieces.”

So that’s what he did. Now based in Los Angeles, Grammer began playing everywhere he could, including gigs at more than 100 colleges and universities, as well as birthday parties and high school dance classes. “I’d send my music to a choreographer and she would choreograph a dance, then I would come in and play while 100 high school students would dance to my music,” he says. “They’d know all my music and come to my shows. It was all really fun. Any time you make the transfer of ‘I’ve created something and I’m giving it to you and I hope it makes you happy,’ that’s good.”

Performing live remains a communal experience for Grammer, who’s toured with the Plain White Ts, Josh Kelley and Natasha Bedingfield, among others. “As an artist, you have an opportunity to get in and move things around in people. It’s one of the only times during the day where they say, ‘I’m going to open up to some other stuff here,’ and you have that hour to get in and move stuff around and put it all back together. Those are the best gigs, where you can see that the whole room has moved somewhere together.”
